By choosing to study with a British Columbia Registered Music Teacher (BCRMTA) such as myself, you have inclusive regional, provincial, and national opportunities that non-registered music teachers do not have access to. I have been a member of the Vernon BCRMTA branch for 10 years, serving as the past Vice President for 6 years and current President 2018-2024. I continue my own musical education through regional and provincial workshops and conferences to enhance my own professional development to be the best teacher I can be.

I developed new composition opportunity at the VRMTA spring piano festival and Canada Music Week®, to promote young Canadian composers of all ages to perform their music for adjudication and non-adjudication purposes.

By choosing to study with a professional registered music teacher you are representing the local, provincial and national bodies that shape music education in Canada!

Children and Music

At Emerald School of Music we know how important music is for the fundamental development of a child. Thus, we thought we would share the knowledge with you! Music affects the growth of a child’s brain academically, emotionally, physically and spiritually. The number of studies linking music to improved educational performance is impressive. Even the ancient Greek philosopher Plato said, “I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but more importantly music; for in the patterns of music and all the arts, are the keys to learning”.

Amazing Facts about Learning Music

  • A US study discovered that children aged 5–7 years who had been lagging behind in their school performance caught up with their peers in reading and were ahead of them in maths after seven months of music lessons.

  • A Swiss study of 1200 children showed how playing music helped children’s reading and verbal skills by improving concentration, memory and self- expression.

  • A recent study from the University of California found that music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Second graders who were given music lessons scored 27% higher on proportional math and fractions tests than children who received no special instruction. Research indicates that musical training permanently wires a young mind for enhanced performance.

  • Music is an art form. We are emotional beings and every child requires an artistic outlet. Music may be your child’s vehicle of expression.
